Peter Harradine, President, EIGCA, to sit on the 'Trends in Golf Course & Resort Design' panel
July 28th, 2003 -- Peter Harradine, President of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA), will sit on the 'Trends in Golf Course & Resort Design' panel at the 2003 European GOLF Investment and Real Estate Conference & Exhibition in Athens on November 29th, 2003. Career summary Born in 1945 next to the old course in Gurten (Berne/Switzerland), Peter continues a family tradition that dates back to 1891. He represents the third generation of golf course architects and his contact with golf course construction started as a very young boy. His father drafted him to work on projects during the school holidays which provided an obligatory, early and somewhat discontented experience with mud, rubber boots, rocks, clay, drainage, heat, target dates, broken down machinery and all the other niceties of construction sites. Playing golf was compulsory in the family and he received his first set of clubs at the age of six. A little practice and many rounds could not improve a handicap of 5. In 1966, Peter went to the USA to study the theoretical and practical aspects of landscaping and golf design and construction. Upon returning to Europe, he built and designed many courses with his father and other prominent European Architects of the time. Peter is the Chief Architect in "Harradine Golf" and has personally designed and co-designed over 150 golf courses in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia from projects at sea level in arid, hot, rocky and salty conditions to ecologically sensitive courses in the plains and mountains and up to alpine sites at altitudes of 1,850 metres. Peter was the President of the European Society of Golf Course Architects and was elected President of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects in April 2002. "I am very pleased and proud to represent the European Institute of Golf Course Architects at the 2003 European GOLF Investment and Real Estate Conference," says Peter. "Golf courses combined with real estate projects are a controversial subject in the majority of Europe and the dogged resistance and complicated procedures required to obtain building permits can be quite draconian. "Obviously the protection and enhancement of the environment and the harmonious integration of the real estate and golf course in to the surrounding landscape is of prime importance. "The timing and significance of this conference is vital and could not have happened at a better time as it seeks to address some of the most important and contentious issues which will hopefully minimise and clarify the many erroneous misconceptions surrounding such developments. "The outcome of this conference will be extremely important to our members especially as it will influence opinions and directives as well as create new opportunities. I definitely look forward to being one of the panellists on November 29."
