Jonathan Smith, Chief Executive, Committed to Green Foundation, to join 'Sustainable Development' panel at the INVgolf Investment Forum 2005

Jonathan Smith

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 24, 2005 -- Jonathan Smith, Chief Executive, Committed to Green Foundation, United Kingdom, will sit on the 'Sustainable Development' panel at the INVgolf Investment Forum 2005, an important international industry and investment forum scheduled to take place in Belek, Antalya, Turkey, April 22 & 23, 2005. J. Christoph Panfil, Managing Director, Hart Howerton, will be chairing this panel.

"Golf developments, if planned, designed and managed correctly, provide the opportunity for considerable economic, social and environmental enhancement," says Jonathan. "However, done badly, they can meet with considerable opposition, go through protracted and often fruitless planning processes and harm local environments and communities. With tightening environmental and planning legislation, it has never been so important for golf to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development. This effort is fundamental to the future growth and success of the golf industry. INVgolf Investment Forum 2005 offers a vital opportunity to learn more about sustainable development, discuss best practice examples and to consider its application in future golf developments."

Career summary

Jonathan Smith was recently appointed Chief Executive of the Committed to Green Foundation -- a not for profit company established to promote environmental sustainability in golf. He has been actively involved in the development and promotion of the Foundation and its principles for over 7 years, and was one of the original participants in the pan European Committed to Green Technical Working Group, responsible for the development of the criteria and processes for the CTG Accreditation Programme.

Prior to taking up his current position, Jonathan was Project Manager of the Scottish Golf Environment Group, a partnership of golfing and environmental organisations. For 9 years he managed this national initiative aimed at bringing together the golfing and environmental sectors in Scotland, and in improving the environmental performance of the industry. In that time he oversaw the growth of the organisation, the delivery of many practical environmental enhancement projects and was successful in unlocking considerable funds from the Scottish Executive for a range of research and development projects aimed at benefiting both golf and the environment.

Jonathan has also worked part time for the R&A over a four year period. His experiences have enabled him to understand the workings of the golf industry from the viewpoint of governing bodies, associations, through to the Golf Club, golfer and greenkeeping angles. He also has practical experience of both golf development and golf tourism issues.

Prior to his involvement in golf, he gained an Honours Degree in Geography from St Andrews University, and subsequently worked in marine resources, followed by three years as a Countryside Ranger.

Jonathan grew up playing golf and currently plays the occasional social round to a handicap of six.
