"The man who has won
millions at the cost of his
conscience is a failure." --
B.C. Forbes
(1880-1954),
Scottish-born American
journalist, founder and
editor of Forbes Magazine.
The 37-years-old B.C.
Forbes was well
established as a financial
newspaperman who
wanted to go beyond
the dry numbers that
were the stock in trade
of his contemporaries'
writing. His new magazine,
for 15 cents a fortnight
or an annual subscription
of USD 3, would strive
to tell the vital stories
of those who ran
successful companies,
and to capture the human
side of business and finance.
At one point, family lore
has it, Doers & Doings
was to be the title of
the publication. In the
end, the phrase was
incorporated into the
masthead: Forbes:
Devoted to Doers
and Doings
. The inside
title page bore the
legend: Devoted to
Investment Finance
and the Human Side of
Business. "Business
was originated to produce
happiness, not to
pile up millions,"

Forbes wrote as the
first sentence of the first
Fact & Comment column.
The inaugural Forbes
Magazine was published
in September 1917
